Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour round cake pan. Beat egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Beat in 1/3 cup of the sugar on high speed, 1 tbsp at a time; continue beating until stiff and glossy.
Mix remaining sugar, the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.
Add bananas, half of the buttermilk, the oil and vanilla. Beat on medium speed. Beat on high speed, scraping bowl constantly,1 minute. Add remaining buttermilk and the egg yolks. Beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionaly, 1 minute. Fold in meringue and walnuts. Pour into pan.
Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool completely.
